Reading

Reading is a vital part of the Year 1 curriculum. We aim to promote a love of reading and spend time each day reading different stories to the children to enhance their imaginations and provide them with a range of interesting vocabulary that helps them with their writing. You can help by spending time sharing any books sent home together.

Reading books will be changed as regularly as possible. Please read with your child every night. Do you know about our school reading initiative, Read For the Stars?  https://stcolumbasknowsley.co.uk/?page_id=3621 Every time they bring their book back in, they earn a “star” for their star chart. The two children who earn the most stars in their class at the end of each term receive a special treat.

homework

We give out homework every Friday, which is to be returned by Thursday of the following week. The children have a list of spellings to learn each week. We test the children on Fridays and they get a small prize if they are all correct. Please detach the spelling sheet from the homework pack and keep the list at home, so you can go over them together. They also have some Maths each week and occasionally some topic work, too.

Useful Information

The children have free milk and fruit mid-morning. They can also buy fruit or yoghurt on the yard for 20p.
