French

At St Columba’s, we aim to foster a love of language learning through engaging and purposeful French lessons. Our intent is to develop pupils’ confidence and curiosity in learning a new language, while equipping them with the skills to understand and communicate in French. We strive to broaden cultural awareness and lay strong foundations for future language study.

French is taught through a carefully planned curriculum that builds vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammatical understanding over time. Lessons are interactive and include speaking, listening, reading and writing activities, supported by songs, stories, and games. We use a progressive scheme of work aligned with the National Curriculum, ensuring that pupils revisit and build upon key concepts regularly.

Our pupils leave Key Stage 2 with a growing confidence in speaking and understanding French. They develop a strong foundation in core language skills, an appreciation for French culture, and a readiness for further language learning at secondary school. Their enjoyment and enthusiasm for French can be seen in their engagement and willingness to communicate in a new language.
