Physical Education

At St Columba’s, we aim to develop active, healthy and confident children who enjoy being physically active. Our PE curriculum, guided by the National Curriculum, helps every child to build physical competence, teamwork and resilience while nurturing the whole child — body, mind and spirit. Alongside this, a wide range of extra-curricular activities encourages pupils to discover new interests, deepen their skills and foster a lifelong love of physical activity.

Our PE curriculum provides a broad, balanced and inclusive programme in line with the National Curriculum. Children develop fundamental movement skills in Key Stage 1 and apply them through games, dance, gymnastics, athletics, swimming and outdoor activities in Key Stage 2. Lessons are engaging, progressive and inclusive, with opportunities for competition, cooperation and self-reflection. Extra-curricular clubs, sports teams and active playtimes extend learning beyond the classroom, giving pupils further chances to be active, represent their school and celebrate personal achievement.

Through both the taught PE curriculum and our extra-curricular offer, pupils at St Columba’s become physically confident, resilient and motivated to lead active, healthy lives. They demonstrate teamwork, respect and perseverance, showing our school values in action. By the time they leave St Columba’s, children understand the importance of physical activity for their wellbeing and have the confidence, enthusiasm and skills to inspire, motivate and achieve; unite, nurture and thrive.
