PSHE

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education)

“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”

Marie Curie

Intent and implementation of the PSHE Curriculum

At St Columba’s Catholic Primary School, we encourage all pupils to thrive in school and in the wider community. To facilitate this, we help children develop their self- identity, self-worth and an appreciation of their personal contribution to the world we live in. We believe it is essential that we educate our pupils and help them nurture their knowledge, skills and attributes they need to succeed and manage their lives not only now, but in the future.

We currently follow the Jigsaw scheme of work recommended by the PSHE Association. This focuses on personal development enhancing self-regulation of emotions and mindful techniques to broaden pupils’ skill set. Alongside this, we carefully plan and tailor individual theme days and weeks to enrich their learning opportunities that benefit them and the wider community.

Throughout the school, each half term, a Jigsaw theme is explored focusing on specific attributes that enables a well-rounded PSHE education for all pupils. Throughout the course of the year, there are 6 themes covered. This enables the whole school to delve into the same topic at different levels enabling pupils’ knowledge and understanding to progress each year.

All lessons follow the same structure: ‘Calm Me’, ‘Open My Mind’, ‘Show Me/ Tell Me’, ‘Let Me Learn’ and ‘Help Me Reflect’. This enables a calm learning environment, where the children are able to fully engage with their learning.

Additionally, British Values are embedded throughout the Jigsaw lessons that helps promote mutual respect for all. British Values are also incorporated throughout the rest of the curriculum. For example, History and Geography.

No Outsiders

Alongside Jigsaw, we also implement No Outsiders. This is a proactive program, which encourages children to value and celebrate each other. Furthermore, All Are Welcome explores equality ensuring everyone is treated equally without discrimination or prejudice. It promotes community cohesion to prepare young people and adults for life as global citizens.

Please see our long term plan to look at the lessons covered throughout the school.

All Are Welcome and Jigsaw complement each other facilitating a comprehensive PSHE curriculum for our pupils.
